Surgy Boy, the industrial city at dusk

Surgy Boy

Il Benchmark. Eight rooms, a blue rubber chicken, and an opening that has nothing to do with any of it.

The system declares you dead before the date field existed. The Benchmark wants to know why you keep going.

Play it here

Not a preview and not a video: it is the game, and it starts inside this page. Keyboard and mouse on a computer, touch controls on a phone. The save stays in your browser and never leaves your device.

The actual game

These are not promotional illustrations: they are frames captured while the game was running. Scroll and it walks.

And then there is the opening

Seventy-six seconds of a real anime opening, sung in Japanese, with a tune that sticks around longer than you would like. Cherry blossoms, the warrior punching through a tank bare handed, torii gates among the rubble at sunset: the full epic apparatus of a long running series.

For an eight room game you finish in one evening. The disproportion is deliberate and it is the part I enjoy most: the opening promises an epic, and what is left standing in the wasteland is a guy with a frozen food box on his head and a blue rubber chicken in his hand.

What it actually is

A short metroidvania about judgement, method, and the demon that looks like you. Eight rooms, ten dialogues, twenty items, four spells, six cutscenes. Those are the real numbers from the project, not an estimate.

It is not a finished product and it is not for sale: it is short, rough, and over quickly. It is called Benchmark because it is a measurement, and not of the player: of the tool it was made with. If something built this way opens inside any website, with nothing to install, no player, no store to ask permission from, then that tool works.

How it is made

With Bombozzi, a 2D editor and engine I built from scratch: you draw the rooms, you place the entities on top, you hit Play and you are inside it. The music comes from Gattofrigi, a sequencer that listens to what happens in the game and changes accordingly.

HOW IT IS MADE

The editor, the engine, the sequencer that listens to the game.
